New research frameworks that simultaneously address production and environmental goals are required to identify promising sustainable intensification options in high-yielding cereal systems. Here we estimated potential changes in environmental footprint associated with crop management practices aimed at breaking the yield ceiling for rice production in Uruguay. Results from a regional survey were combined with field experiments to integrate impacts on productivity and sustainability at two different intensification levels (average-yielding and high-yielding). Survey results indicate that high-yielding farmers produced 14% more grain compare to the regional average (7900 kg ha−1), with 25% to 99% lower agrochemical contamination risk and similar nitrogen use efficiency and carbon footprint. In on-farm trials, the alternative management practices increased yield beyond that of high-yielding farmers by up to 7% in small plots (8 site-years) and 15% in field-scale comparisons (6 site-years), yet an ex post assessment of environmental indicators shows significant decline of resource use efficiencies and increased carbon footprint. Thus, yield gains were not able to compensate for increased environmental footprint, highlighting the challenge of advancing the dual goals of SI in production systems nearing the yield ceiling. This study provides a simple but powerful framework for advancing SI in mainstream cereal production systems based on cost-effective modifications to existing agronomic experiments. Más de 1000 personas (700 de ellas a través de internet) participaron de la jornada "de pasto a leche" que dictaron en conjunto INIA y FUCREA el pasado jueves 27 de julio en La Estanzuela.
La lechería uruguaya tiene delante el desafío de mejorar su competitividad a través de la eficiencia en la productividad y utilización de las pasturas y de las reservas forrajeras y en la productividad de la mano de obra a través de inversiones en salas de ordeño eficientes, maquinaria e infraestructura.
No se puede gestionar lo que no se mide. Para gestionar una alimentación eficiente sobre pasto no se puede dejar de recorrer el campo.
La carga es esencial para aprovechar el pasto. Aunque a misma carga hay una brecha muy grande atribuible al manejo. Datos de producción competitiva muestran que tambos con 1 vacas/ha variaban en cosecha de pasto entre 2 y 4 toneladas de MS/ha/año; esta tendencia se incrementa con la carga; tambos con 2 vacas/ha variaban su cosecha de pasto entre 2 y 8 t MS/ha/año.
En Uruguay el potencial para producir pasto es casi idéntico (aproximadamente 11 t MS/ha/año) para todas las zonas del país, según el monitoreo satelital de Conaprole. La diferencia está en el sistema
El Proyecto 10 MIL (10 por el potencial de cosechar 10 t de MS de pasto en el area de vaca mas, MIL por módulo de intensificaion lechera y por 1000 kg de sólidos por ha) está explorando en INIA interacciones entre tipos de vaca y estrategia de alimentacíon.
En FUCREA un estudio reciente en tambos que alimentaban a sus vacas con dietas 60% de pasto, arrojó márgenes positivos pese a que el precio de la leche fue muy bajo en el periodo analizado. La clave está en el pasto.
